It’s true that fresh, tasty seafood can be found at many restaurants on Maui — Paia Fish Market and Mala Ocean Tavern both come to mind. But I still maintain that a visit to Mama’s is a worthwhile experience to try at least once — if it isn’t outside of your budget. You don’t have to dine at Mama’s Fish House to enjoy the cove. All beaches in Hawaii are public so go visit this perfect beach and cove even if you decide not to dine there. Some people do feel uncomfortable being in their shorts or bikini with restaurant guests wearing their finest aloha clothing though. Erica and I are both strong supporters of going for lunch.

By early afternoon the entire village arrived, all of them dressed in colorful pareu’s (lava-lavas), flower leis and flower hei’s (head dresses). An impressive array of food was served in hand-carved wooden bowls and plates. There was no beer or wine because the monthly supply boat was late, but a good supply of home-made sour orange beer was on hand. They lived aboard for over a year, practicing navigation and sailing to the islands off Southern California.

For these most coveted spots, you’ll want to make your reservation 4-6 months in advance. I was impressed to learn that mama's serves fresh fish caught by local fisherman. Truly, the seafood was evidently fresh, spectacularly prepared, and beautifully flavored. We ordered the antarctic toothfish caught 6,000 feet deep under glacier, as well as the kona kanpachi stuffed with lobster, crab, baked in a macadamia nut crust. My toothfish was steamed with hana ginger and SO buttery it practically melted in my mouth.
