Mamas Fish House in Maui Restaurant

In the beginning there were few full-time fishermen, but as Mama’s grew, so did the fishing community. They brought their fish directly to the restaurant where it was filleted and served within 24 hours. Floyd printed the names of the fisherman and where the fish was caught on the daily menu. I'm the co-founder, with my wife Erica, of the best Hawaii travel guide on the internet in our biased opinions. We enjoy traveling throughout Hawaii after living on Maui and Oahu. We share our adventures, travel tips and resources, and honest reviews so you can easily plan your dream vacation to Hawaii.

Look for the distinctive aerial tree roots of the Hala Tree as you make your way to the second check-in area. I won’t deny that Mama’s attracts a TON of tourists, but I personally know local Maui residents who enjoy a night out at Mama’s, too. We are right on the beach, 1.5 miles past Paia on the road to Hana. I had some good bouillabaisse at French restaurants and I didn't expect it to be better than the French restaurants. Reservations can no longer be booked on OpenTable's app or website.

It’s true that fresh, tasty seafood can be found at many restaurants on Maui — Paia Fish Market and Mala Ocean Tavern both come to mind. But I still maintain that a visit to Mama’s is a worthwhile experience to try at least once — if it isn’t outside of your budget. You don’t have to dine at Mama’s Fish House to enjoy the cove. All beaches in Hawaii are public so go visit this perfect beach and cove even if you decide not to dine there. Some people do feel uncomfortable being in their shorts or bikini with restaurant guests wearing their finest aloha clothing though. Erica and I are both strong supporters of going for lunch.

Reasons to Go to Mama’s Fish House for Lunch

In conclusion, Mama’s Fish House is worth visiting if you’re looking for an unforgettable experience with fabulous food on Maui. The ever-changing menu features fresh seafood from local fishermen, as well as succulent short ribs and delicious steak. This is by far the best restaurant we have eaten at on any of the Hawaiian islands. The food is exceptional and EVERY dish explodes with incredible flavor. Make your reservations very early as the popularity of this dining spot makes availability a real challenge as you get closer to your desired date. We booked 6 months in advance to get the time and date we wanted.

Mama’s Fish House Restaurant and Inn is a Maui classic for fine dining. A Maui itinerary isn’t complete without visiting this famous fish house, featuring locally caught Hawaiian fish served to perfection. If you are planning on going during peak times, such as holidays or weekends, you may want to book even earlier. Overall, Mama’s Fish House is a great place to visit if you’re looking for an enjoyable dining experience while in Maui.

No, as the sunsets on the opposite side of the island. However, the restaurant’s view of the ocean and nearby beach park is still stunning! Enjoy a meal with friends or family and take in the peaceful views around you. This is a Maui institution; even if you're not celebrating a special occasion, Mama's is an experience that's worth the splurge.

A Tahitian family urged them to visit Tahiti and the South Pacific which they said was still an undiscovered paradise. Hawaii had just become a state and a friend had urged them to visit Maui. After lunch, visit Kaulahao Beach (4-minutes south of Mama’s to view the sleeping sea turtles on the beach and then walk off lunch in Paia before you head home.

They print menus daily, and next to the entree names you’ll find the name of the fisher and the location of the catch. Similar to other fine dining establishments, you’ll receive the day’s menu along with a separate drinks menu. We have traveled in over 90 countries and finding a place to eat is always an adventure. Unlike most restaurants with beautiful views, the scenery doesn’t disappear after the sun disappears.

Our Reservationists can book up to 18 months in advance for both Lunch & Dinner. From day one, Floyd and Doris understood the importance of building relationships with Maui's fisherman. They are imperative to the creation of our dishes and we are so grateful for their commitment to Mama's and their respect for the ocean through sustainable practices. They remained in Papeete for a few months while Karen grew stronger.

They re-introduced breadfruit and other long-neglected Polynesian foods to their menu and they encouraged local farmers to grow the best organic produce. Nine years later they bought the property that is now Mama’s Fish House. The first cook, a close friend, persuaded Doris that the right name for the restaurant was “Mama’s Fish House”. Maui restaurants were mostly steak houses and they wanted to everyone to know that Mama’s served fresh Maui fish. They stayed in French Polynesia for the next six months. Letters from friends in Lahaina told of plans to develop Maui as a major tourist destination.

By early afternoon the entire village arrived, all of them dressed in colorful pareu’s (lava-lavas), flower leis and flower hei’s (head dresses). An impressive array of food was served in hand-carved wooden bowls and plates. There was no beer or wine because the monthly supply boat was late, but a good supply of home-made sour orange beer was on hand. They lived aboard for over a year, practicing navigation and sailing to the islands off Southern California.

The restaurant sits in the sand, with table views of the ocean framed by coconut trees. You can’t experience the view in all its glory during dinner. And last, but not least, the food is always both fresh and fantastic. Mama’s is celebrated for supporting and buying directly from local fishers and growers. The menu changes daily to reflect what the fishers catch early in the day.

For these most coveted spots, you’ll want to make your reservation 4-6 months in advance. I was impressed to learn that mama's serves fresh fish caught by local fisherman. Truly, the seafood was evidently fresh, spectacularly prepared, and beautifully flavored. We ordered the antarctic toothfish caught 6,000 feet deep under glacier, as well as the kona kanpachi stuffed with lobster, crab, baked in a macadamia nut crust. My toothfish was steamed with hana ginger and SO buttery it practically melted in my mouth.
